Shopping for a Cold Air Intake
by: Paul Jones

So, what is a cold air intake anyway? Well if you "Google" the internet for "cold air intake " you'll find there are over twenty (20) different brands of cold air intake systems to fit almost every make/model of truck and SUV. I will discuss cold air intake systems manufactured by companies who in my opinion are favored by the aftermarket crowd. K & N , and Classic Airaid top my list when shopping for a cold air intake system.
All engines require air flow for fuel combustion and cold air is much denser than hot air, it’s got more oxygen in it.

A cold air intake system or performance intake kit is simply a less restricted filtered inlet air system to your engine. The benefit over OEM air boxes equipped  with your truck or SUV is improved engine air flow results in greater efficiency and horsepower output. That's it, other than they come in a variety of colors, look cool when you pop the hood and your engine produces a voice husky with emotion when you accelerate.

Performance Claims

I have read some fairly aggressive claims about cold air intake systems on the internet regarding the increase in horsepower and gas mileage. When considering a cold air intake system for your truck or car be aware your results will vary depending on your make and model of vehicle, personal driving habits, load on the engine (hauling or towing) and the existing air system restriction. If you are person who drives there vehicle "hard" because of increased horsepower after installing a cold air intake system you probably want see any increase in gas mileage. A 5% to 10% increase in horsepower is typical after installing a cold air intake system. I recommend you search for unbiased testimonials on the internet regarding horsepower and gas mileage performance
increases regarding cold air intake systems.

Cost and Maintenance

Prices of Cold Air Intake Systems range anywhere from $200.00 to $500.00 dollars and components vary with each manufacture. One feature they seem to all have in common is the intake air filter element is reusable and mostly likely will last you for as long as you own the vehicle. To clean the K&N filter in my truck, I simply use a mild detergent, rinse it out thoroughly and re-oil according to the manufacture. No sweat!

Most Cold Air Intake Systems are legal in all fifty (50) states, will
not void your warranty and are guaranteed for the life of your vehicle. In addition a Cold Air Intake Systems will operate with your truck or SUV's original equipment computers and emissions control systems and will provide superior air flow and filtration to your engine.

Bottom line
: A Cold Air Intake System in my opinion is the easiest truck or SUV accessory you can install yourself that will maximize your engines performance and pay you back in increased gas mileage.
